My son is back to his old self

My son’s depression came on suddenly in January of this year. The doctor said it might be hormonal. When he started experiencing the depression, the doctor put him on an antidepressant.

My son had a horrible reaction. He was behaving weirdly and twitching. He was changed to another medication and he did the same exact thing. I was scared to have him take anything else.

When I took him to his current psychiatrist, the GeneSight test was suggested. The doctor swabbed the inside of my son’s cheek and that was it. It was not long at all until we got the results back. The medications he was originally on were in the yellow category and were not the best choice for him.

The doctor was able to prescribe a green category medication and he has been fine since. He also added a supplement because of my son’s MTHFR results.

My son is like a new kid now. In about May everything started kicking in, and he is back to his old self. He is normally funny, energetic, and loved to be out and meeting people. He had become sad and did not go out.

Everyone should have the test. These drugs are not something to mess with – they can have horrible side effects and the trial and error is painful. GeneSight is a simple test and your doctor can get helpful answers. It is frustrating that everyone doesn’t do it or more doctors do not know about it.

This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
