“I just couldn’t get out of bed, no matter how hard I tried.”

My name is Ronni Shapiro. About five years ago, I went through a very traumatic experience in my life that resulted in a very acute case of depression and I just couldn’t get out of bed. No matter how hard I tried for the following three years I went to different psychiatrists. It was like throwing darts at a dartboard except that I was the dartboard. It was horrible. It was just horrible. And I could not live like that anymore. I was extremely fortunate to cross paths with a nurse practitioner who was well versed in the benefits of this genetic test who was completely comfortable with using it. I had nothing to lose. So I was all in.

I found that I had one short receptor site and what I needed was an additional medication to push the current drugs that I was taking to actually hit my receptor sites. So they added one more medication in a very low dose and within seven days I was a completely different person. It was remarkable. I could see the possibility of a future with happiness.

I knew that there had to be a better life out there for me and I was absolutely determined to go find that for me and for my children and for the people that loved me. It was just a cheek swab after so many years of trying different medications and all their reactions. It’s a blessing.

My real hope is that every mental health care provider will become familiar with this test, administer the test, use the test and help people get better. I didn’t know that this test was out there. I went searching blindly for anything. But now that you have the information that the test exists, it’s easy, it’s non-invasive, and it works. Find that person who can help you with this test and try it. The bottom line is you have nothing to lose. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.

If you are a healthcare provider and interested in learning more about the GeneSight test, please contact us at 855.891.9415. If you are a patient, please talk with your doctor to see if the GeneSight test may be helpful.
