GeneSight was a big part of taking care of my own mental health

I had felt, from a very young age, that I was different. I did not have the language to know that what I was feeling was a combination of depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

When I first sought help a few years back, the provider was strongly in favor of SSRIs, and I was not. I found another psychiatrist and tried to move forward without medication.

I was then cast in a reality show, where singles date without ever being able to see the other person. Couples who want to stay matched meet, go on a honeymoon, and ultimately get married. I was one of them.

After the show first aired, my anxiety and depression hit new levels – I was struggling. I realized that my mental health had been exploited to create drama. After less than a year, my marriage was falling apart and I was heartbroken.

Given my previous medication failures, I knew I needed to do something different when seeking treatment. I did some research and found the GeneSight test. I asked my psychiatrist if we could try it and they agreed to order the test. After reviewing my report, they switched me to a medication that the test results indicated may be a good fit for me – and it was!

I have been on the same medication for more than eight months and, despite some personal emotional challenges, I feel good. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I had not started on this medication.

Anyone who knows me, or who has watched me on TV, knows I am an enormous advocate for mental health. For me, GeneSight was a big part of taking care of my own mental health. I believe in this test so much I tell everyone I know about it. I offer this testimonial with no expectation of reimbursement because I believe talking about it may help those who are struggling like I was.

This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
