TW: Self harm, abuse

My motto for 2024 is “Not my problem!”  And for the first time in my life, it’s true! I had a very difficult childhood as I was physically, mentally and emotionally abused. Also, at 10 years old I was forced to sit in the courtroom during my father’s trial. I felt something “switch” in my brain and that was the first time I had learned to dissociate to protect myself. I was 14 when I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

I was heavily medicated but to no effect.

I had my first full blown depressive episode when I was 31 years old.  For days, I could not function.   I remember my mom holding me, crying herself, asking me what was wrong.  I was then prescribed antidepressants. However, even with the medication I still wasn’t feeling well. I had started cutting and attempting to take my own life. I told my doctors that I wasn’t feeling any better, so they kept increasing my doses.

In 2017, I moved and needed to switch psychiatrists. This new doctor offered me the GeneSight test, explaining how it may potentially benefit my situation. And it did!  My GeneSight test results showed that SSRIs may be less likely to work for me.  Since my doctor switched me to a tricyclic antidepressant, as opposed to an SSRI, I have felt so much better!

I firmly believe that everyone should have the insight the GeneSight test provides when starting any mental health medication treatment plan. The GeneSight test saved my sanity, literally!

Thank you to my wonderful psychiatrist for using the GeneSight test and giving me my life back!

This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.

If you are a healthcare provider and interested in learning more about the GeneSight test, please contact us at 855.891.9415. If you are a patient, please talk with your doctor to see if the GeneSight test may be helpful.
