They enrolled nearly 2000 veterans with depression at sites throughout the country to test whether access to GeneSight® Test results affected medication selection and improved treatment outcomes for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2022, the study found patients whose clinicians had access to GeneSight Test results were significantly more likely to achieve remission over 24 weeks compared to treatment as usual. Additionally, access to GeneSight Test results impacted prescribing, as patients in the treatment as usual arm were more likely to be prescribed medications with significant gene-drug interactions compared to patients in the GeneSight Test arm. In a collaborative effort between VA investigators and Myriad, a post-hoc analysis of the PRIME Care trial was performed, which explored whether having access to the GeneSight Test results increased the rate of remission and response over time in patients with MDD, and if the effect was persistent. Published in the Oct. 30, 2025 edition of Frontiers in Pharmacology, the new post-hoc analysis showed that patients in the GeneSight Test arm were at any given time during the 24-week study period relative to patients receiving treatment as usual: • 27% more likely to achieve remission from depression • 21% more likely to experience response (at least a 50% reduction in depressive symptoms) • led to faster initial remission and response in patients. • Further, the post-hoc analysis showed that this benefit persisted over six months with no evidence of changing over time. “Every single day matters to someone suffering from depression; patients want to get back to feeling like themselves as quickly as possible. As a result, a long trial-and-error period with medication can be frustrating for both clinicians and patients,” said Dale Muzzey, chief scientific officer, Myriad Genetics. “This post-hoc analysis shows that treatment informed by the GeneSight Test led to faster initial remission and response in patients with MDD – and this benefit lasted for at least six months.” Disclaimer: Not all patients who receive the GeneSight Psychotropic Test will achieve response and/or remission or have faster initial response and/or remission, and not all patients will have a persistent effect. Myriad Genetics plans to submit these data to payers as part of its ongoing efforts to increase patient access to the GeneSight Test and to help patients achieve remission from depression. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider. The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
