What is the GeneSight test?

GeneSight Psychotropic is a pharmacogenomic test which means that it analyzes how your genes may affect medication outcomes. The GeneSight test analyzes clinically important genetic variations in your DNA. Results can inform your healthcare provider about how you may break down or respond to certain medications commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other psychiatric conditions.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by your healthcare provider or nurse practitioner. The test is a simple cheek swab taken in your healthcare provider’s office or can be sent by your healthcare provider to be taken in the convenience of your home.

Cost shouldn’t be a barrier

If you have insurance, we will bill your insurance for the cost of the GeneSight test. Some insurance plans will cover the cost though this can vary.

Insurance type Typical Cost
Medicare (part B) $0 out of pocket
Medicaid $0 out of pocket
Medicare advantage (part C),
commercial or other $330 or less
Uninsured $330* or less

*Reduced self-pay cost

The GeneSight Promise

If you decide to use your insurance and we determine that your cost will exceed $330, we will contact you before processing the test and before billing you to make sure you would like to proceed.

Reduced self-pay option

All patients are eligible for the reduced self-pay option of $330. Self-pay may be the most affordable option for patients whose out-of-pocket cost is estimated to be higher than $330, for those whose insurance does not cover the GeneSight test, or for those without insurance.

A comprehensive report,
personalized for you

The GeneSight test report may help you avoid multiple medication trials by providing information about which medications may require dose adjustments, be less likely to work, or have an increased risk of side effects based on your genetic information.

The report also includes information on how a patient’s smoking status may affect their body’s metabolism of certain medications.

  •  Use as directed
  •  Moderate gene-drug interaction
  •  Significant gene-drug interaction

The report classifies over 60 mental health medications into three categories.

The GeneSight test results do not provide information on disease diagnosis, medication allergies, drug-drug interactions, or which medications will work best.

The GeneSight MTHFR Test

The GeneSight MTHFR test shows whether a person has variation in MTHFR, an enzyme required to convert folic acid and dietary folate into its active form, L-methylfolate

The GeneSight MTHFR Test result alone is not intended to determine treatment decisions regarding folate supplementation or measurement of serum levels of homocysteine or folate.

Backed by extensive research

7 clinical studies published in peer-reviewed journals support the GeneSight Test’s effectiveness.

PRIME Care study

The largest pharmacogenomic (PGx) randomized controlled trial (RCT) ever conducted in mental health.

PRIME Care Time-to-Event Analysis1

A post-hoc analysis of the PRIME Care trial was performed to determine whether access to the GeneSight Test increased the rates of remission and response over time compared to treatment as usual in patients with Major Depressive Disorder. Furthermore, this analysis aimed to determine if the effects of the GeneSight Test were persistent and did not change over six months.

Key findings

At any given time during the 24-week study, compared to treatment as usual, patients in the GeneSight Test arm were more likely to achieve remission and response. Additionally this benefit persisted over the 24 week time frame.

Faster initial remission and response than those in the treatment as usual (TAU) arm1

Persistent benefit over 6 months with no evidence of changing over time1

Step 2

Collection

Your provider collects a DNA sample by painlessly swabbing the inside of your cheek OR you can collect the sample at home using our patient collection kit.

Step 3

Lab

The sample is sent to our lab for analysis.

Step 4

Results

After we receive your sample, your healthcare provider will typically get test results in about 2 days.
