HomePatient StoriesFrom depression to seeing “new horizons” From depression to seeing “new horizons” July 9, 2017 LeonardSouth Dennis, MA For over the last five years I have suffered from severe depression. I felt flat emotionally and socially and anxious. I have taken a variety of medications. They kept adding and adding medications until I went to my wonderful current doctor. I learned about the GeneSight test from my doctor. Taking the test was certainly easy. They swabbed my cheek and sent it in. I met with the doctor two weeks after the test. She went over the list and saw the list of medications I had tried. A lot of those medications were in yellow and red. One of the medications in the green I had taken 30 years ago. It is not prescribed as much now. So I tried it again along with another drug for anxiety. We got rid of all the other medications and added folic acid (indicated by MTHFR results). Now I am accomplishing things that were onerous before. I am playing and enjoying being in a band for senior citizens called New Horizon’s. I have done theater most of my adult life. I have auditioned and am in a play right now. I also joined a candle pin bowling league – that’s a New England thing. I have gotten back to playing golf – I hadn’t played for four years. I ran a 5k – I have not done that for 7 years. I have my life back. I feel like after 5 years I am enjoying myself and other people are enjoying me too. My wife said she finally got her Lenny back – the man she married. I now have energy and can handle things at an even level. This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider. The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
