HomePatient StoriesAfter years of medication trial and error, the GeneSight test was a success for me! After years of medication trial and error, the GeneSight test was a success for me! February 23, 2026 Mary G.Columbia, SC I have been taking medications on and off since high school; I had struggled with depression and anxiety. I realized at some point that I had taken 5 different meds at different doses, all just trial and error. On top of that I had lost my job last year and was working at a new job that was not a good fit for me, to the point where I did not want to get out of bed. And it was nearly fully remote, so I was spending WAY too much time alone! And with my husband not working, it was a lot. I heard about the GeneSight test on TikTok. So many young women like me were talking about how the test helped their clinicians decide on a medication based on their genetics to treat their depression and anxiety, without going through the time and toll of trial and error. So, I asked my primary care clinician to order one for me. They did a little research and despite the fact they had never used the test before, they ordered the test for me. Based on my results, my clinician switched me to a medication that my clinician felt was more appropriate for me. That was in March and since then I have done a complete 180°. I am currently feeling the best mentally that I could ever ask for. In fact, the GeneSight test was such a success for me, that my clinician is now ordering it for other patients too! This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider. The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
