My name is Carmen Kosicek. I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

Objective testing to me involves utilizing everything that I can get my hands on that are actual tests. So, for example, drawing blood, checking blood levels, looking at white blood cell counts, red blood cell counts, iron counts. In addition to that, in psychiatry, it’s with the addition of pharmacogenomic testing.

GeneSight testing has afforded me the confidence of showcasing with objective testing, not my guesswork as to what medication would work better for that patient. It is not there to tell you what to prescribe but rather to guide you.

I have been doing telepsychiatry since before COVID so that’s my tagline now. We are able to see each other over a HIPAA secured Zoom link if you will and actually take care of the patient by seeing them and meeting them in their environment.

GeneSight definitely saves me time. The direct to patient kit that is mailed right to the patient’s home has been invaluable for those that I serve, especially with COVID, not everybody can make it in for the test.

Having this go right to their house has been invaluable to help me with care. By saving time for me, it is also saving time for the patients. Patients come to me and they’ve tried multiple medications. Each medication choice in psychiatry takes many months. So, here with an objective test to point me in a direction, I’m able to streamline care and save the patient time.

I 110% know that GeneSight testing has changed the way that I practice as a PMHNP.

This story is one clinician’s personal experience. Other experiences may vary.

As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of medical history, other medications being taken, family history, and other factors.
