I have suffered with depression for the past fifteen years. I would experience gloomy thoughts and times where I have feelings of extreme isolation. I have tried many different medications over the years with no real improvement in my condition. It became routine for me to go back to my doctor after failing a medication, only to have him prescribe yet another medication. Upon my last visit to my doctor, he mentioned that there was a new test he suggested I try.

The GeneSight test itself was very easy. My doctor just swabbed my cheeks and mailed off the swabs. After getting the report back my doctor told me he was surprised by all of the medications that were in the red category of my GeneSight report. Many of those same red category medications I had previously tried and they were not very effective. My doctor used the result from the test to select a new medication from the green category of my results.

It took about a month for me to fully feel the effects of the new medication. However I feel like a new person! Now I am more social; I enjoy going out to places with friends, and those gloomy feelings I had for years are finally gone. I tell everyone I can about the test now.

I encourage anyone who has considered the test to do it. I am grateful for the GeneSight test!

This story is one patient’s personal experience. Other patients may not have the same experience or outcome. Do not make any changes to your current medications or dosing without consulting your healthcare provider.

The GeneSight test must be ordered by and used only in consultation with a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. As with all genetic tests, the GeneSight test results have limitations and do not constitute medical advice. The test results are designed to be just one part of a larger, complete patient assessment, which would include proper diagnosis and consideration of your medical history, other medications you may be taking, your family history, and other factors.
